Instructor Bio
Sally Penley is a graphic designer and lettering artist living in Olympia. She began her calligraphic journey over 40 years ago, studying with such masters as Lloyd Reynolds, Jaki Svaren and Tim Girvin. Sally, who is left-handed, is a fine artist who enjoys the process of creating various mixed media backgrounds for her letters using acrylic glazes, watercolor, pastels and paste papers.
Sally holds a BFA in Design. Before her “day job” retirement, she was director of communications at Weyerhaeuser Company in Federal Way, WA. Currently, she is a full-time working artist at her studio at Buck’s 5th Avenue where she also holds various workshops and curates art shows for The Loft Gallery at Buck’s 5th Avenue.

Class Description
In this class, you will experience the joy of “sumi mark-making” with the sumi brush and a variety of other tools. You will learn to make the eight basic brush strokes to formulate Asian characters, then you will explore gestural mark-making with both familiar and makeshift tools. You will learn about signature chops, grinding ink, rice paper, and how to add color with watercolor and high-flow liquid acrylics to create lively works of Asian-inspired art.
