Instructor Bio

Sally Penley is a graphic designer and lettering artist living in Olympia. She began her calligraphic journey over 40 years ago, studying with such masters as Lloyd Reynolds, Jaki Svaren and Tim Girvin. Sally, who is left-handed, is a fine artist who enjoys the process of creating various mixed media backgrounds for her letters using acrylic glazes, watercolor, pastels and paste papers.

Sally holds a BFA in Design. Before her “day job” retirement, she was director of communications at Weyerhaeuser Company in Federal Way, WA. Currently, she is a full-time working artist at her studio at Buck’s 5th Avenue where she also holds various workshops and curates art shows for The Loft Gallery at Buck’s 5th Avenue.

Class Description

Are you looking for ways to make your finished designs more successful? Do you find it hard to make all the elements work together (image, calligraphy, credit, signature) so your finished piece “snaps?” In this class, designed specifically for calligraphers , you’ll learn some key design fundamentals, planning techniques and some easy ways to create a successful composition. Using a simple checklist, you’ll be amazed at the power of these basic design & composition “rules of the road.”

X-acto knife and small cutting board
9 x 12 pad of layout or marker paper
Glue stick
Magic tape
Good paper
Favorite writing tools
Inks/watercolor/gouache for finished work
Two or three favorite quotes and/or pieces you’d like to improve
